The Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16th to honour hundreds of children who took part in the famous Soweto (South Africa) protests while demanding their rights. The day is also used to highlight the current situation and rights of the African child and to quality education and a better life.

St. Martin CSA through its "Inua toto" project celebrated this day on June 15th in collaboration with different primary schools, other charitable children institutions, CSOs and government officials. One of the objectives of this project is to uplift the status of the child in the society and therefore children were given an opportunity to exercise their leadership and organizational skills. They met weeks prior to the celebration and agreed on the programme of the day and divided various roles and responsibilities among themselves. This meeting was chaired by the chair of the zonal children’s cabinet (12 schools) who also doubles up as the guest of honour during the celebration. 

The day brought together 700 children and some adults. The greatest achievement of this day was to see children running the day successfully with minimal guidance from the teachers and the project staff. It was also encouraging to listen to children highlighting the plight of the children who are denied their rights in the community. This was done through songs, dances, skits and speeches.

    On behalf of the Uganda National Children Authority and indeed on my own behalf, we appreciate the services of St. martin CSA particularly the way you are successfully mobilizing children into active citizens, indeed we here in Uganda as National Children Authority are actively promoting meaningful Child Participation by ensuring children are fully engaged in child participation activities. We are currently sensitizing primary schools and establishing model Child Participation Clubs in schools to ensure children use these structures as platform to enable them (children) have a voice. We keep in touch!
