The St. Martin Approach

The evaluation set out to examine the understanding of the approach amongst stakeholders, how effective it is in reaching the set goals of St.  Martin, and if and how it can replicated and adapted for similar projects. Interviews were conducted with all stakeholdergroups (beneficiaries, volunteers, community members, public sector, associates and staff) in all 11 zones where St. Martin CSA is active. 
The findings show that the approach is an innovative method to involve the communities into improving the situation of vulnerable people in their midst. A social and economic impact on the lives of beneficiaries was found and the approach is ready to be used in similar settings where the participation of the community is wished for. Finally, the the involved stakeholders have a good understanding of the approach. 
The evaluation makes a number of recommendations, amongst others: The need for a continuous effort to train the stakeholders on what the St. Martin Approach is and how it is applied was identified in combination with a better documentation of the lessons learned. And an increased collaboration with other organisations could help spread but also improve the ideas and concept of the approach.
In this context, St. Martin CSA publish a case study regarding its approach in the journal "International Affairs and Global Strategy“ (Vol 77, 2019)

What we do

Support youth acquiring technical skills

The programme works with vulnerable youth by providing them with practical skills through attaching them with local artisans. In addition, the youth are equipped with life-skills and entrepreneurial skills. This increases their opportunity to access decent job creation and enhances their employability, thereby contributing to reduce unemployment, vulnerability and poverty for vulnerable and marginalized youth, both in urban and rural settings. }

 

Empower parents socially and economically

These are parents and guardians of vulnerable children in the community. They are plagued by a myriad of vices which trap them into poverty and therefore are not able to provide for their children. The project works with these parents as a proactive strategy of solving the problem of street connected children. Parents are encouraged to join support groups for social support, counseling, empowerment on parenting skills and economic empowerment. Groups are expected to grow their savings by loaning each other for economic development.

Protect and Rescue children from Abusive situations

The programme rescues children facing harm as a result of physical, sexual, child marriage, FGM and emotional abuse, as well as neglect and exploitation. Street connected children are also rescued. They are provided with proper care in our rescue centres.  

Upon rehabilitation, these children are reintegrated back into the community and provided with education support like school uniforms and fees where need be in order to settle them in schools. The programme also target vulnerable in Nyahururu sub-county who lack access to one or more basic needs and their rights are constantly abused. The programme support such children with schooling needs, resource mobilization from the community as well as advocating for their rights.

Establishing Sustainable Livelihoods: We believe in long-term solutions. Through our unique approach, we train 20 “Sustainable Livelihood champions” Trainers of Trainers, cascading valuable knowledge on protection, diversification, and resilience to climate change to 200 beneficiaries. This ensures a lasting impact and empowers communities to thrive independently.
