International Day of Education

Particular attention during the World Education Day has been given towards mobilization around education and chatting ways to translate commitment and global Initiaves into action.

St. Martin CSA through the Community Programme for Children in Need is implementing a two years project known as "Leave No Child Behind". The overall goal of the project is ‘to contribute to social inclusion and poverty reduction by enabling greater access to education system in Laikipia County for children from marginalised and special needs groups.’

Education 2 As the world marks the International Education Day. St Martin CSA celebrated and resounded with the day's theme of "Investing in People and Prioritizing Education" during our morning community prayers.The programe was able to share the experiences with their various target groups on their interactions with their various target groups and noted that everyday experiences leads to our learning which should in turn contribute to education. We should therefore encourage our children to have the freedom to learn.

What we do

Empower parents socially and economically

These are parents and guardians of vulnerable children in the community. They are plagued by a myriad of vices which trap them into poverty and therefore are not able to provide for their children. The project works with these parents as a proactive strategy of solving the problem of street connected children. Parents are encouraged to join support groups for social support, counseling, empowerment on parenting skills and economic empowerment. Groups are expected to grow their savings by loaning each other for economic development.

Treatment and Rehabilitation

Owing to the high number of people already affected by drug abuse and mental illness who cannot access rehabilitation and treatment services. The project identifies the most vulnerable clients for support to access rehabilitation and medical treatment services. The objective of these support services is to restore the dignity and functionality of those people who cannot independently or with the help of relatives access the retreatment and rehabilitation services. This includes partial payment for psychiatric assessment, inpatient psychiatric treatment and residential drug rehabilitation. Furthermore, the programme implements a community based mental health programme where clients shall be offered outpatient addiction counseling, Intensive Outpatient Rehabilitation, peer support groups etc.

Strenghten the capacity of Child Right Promoters

These are volunteers who are drawn from the community and are empowered to act as community TOTs, and supported to implement activities in churches, schools, public meetings and other fora with the aim of sensitizing the community on child rights. These volunteers are headhunted from among church school teachers, duty bearers and primary school teachers. In addition to awareness creation, they mobilize resources from their communities to support vulnerable children and shed lights on abuses facing children. The programme is currently working with 130 volunteers in various parts of Nyahururu, and Nyandarua.

Promote Child Participation

The project targets 72 primary schools in Laikipia County. In each school, a platform for children to air their views is created through the Children’s Government where children leaders are empowered to become change agents. Children, members of these governments are trained on child rights and responsibilities, meaningful child participation, role of children as duty bearers, lifeskills, public interaction skills and methods of awareness creation.
